I just found that Den Beste panned Azumanga. A few years ago I'd think, "What a dumbass". Or worse. Now the new sage me just observes how he missed the point, and accepts it. Merit or not, it won't be a Naruto-sized hit, ever. And it's not as if I lose anything because Den Beste fails to participate in the groundswell of support. The DVD run will not be canceled now (four are in stores already). And if fewer people know about it, it will be "the magus of my secret knowledge", to borrow from Peter S. Beagle.

So, I'm sitting pretty here, in the security of my understanding and smirk reading Den Beste's "Genre: farce, girls in high school". The actual point defies such classification. For the want of a better formula, it's "a tale of innocence". This thematic is touched in many anime, although mostly from the angle of loss of innocence, perhaps because it's more dramatic. In Azumanga, girls do not have to go through it; they just live, oblivious to the evil. Some fanfic authors latch on it pretty quickly, and supply the missing pieces, sometimes in hair-raising ways. But I'm getting on a tangent here. And it's officially O.K. to ignore all subtlieties and just enojoy the gags, if you so prefer.
